Understanding the intricacies of the technologies behind the products I've worked on is second nature to me. Translating that understanding to customers, however, poses a challenge. This is where sales props come into play. Acting as intermediaries, these props visually convey the key qualities and technologies that set a product apart.
I've been actively involved in creating various props tailored to meet the sales team's needs. A notable example was the "direct chill" module for a client's product. This innovative design utilized an aluminium block for water cooling instead of a traditional reservoir. The result: improved efficiency, no bacterial buildup, and consistently higher flow rates. Additionally, a sparkling chiller tank introduced a process where CO2 was dried into the water, enhancing water saturation and yielding a superior product compared to competitors.
To customers, however, this ground-breaking product often looked like a set of metal tubes around a can. The engineering details were hard to convey, and the primary points of interest were the data sheet and the price tag. In response, I was commissioned to create a sales prop that showcased the raw components, complete with colour coding to highlight their functions. This allowed customers to gain a deeper understanding of the product's technology beyond the surface appearance.
Beyond sales props, there's another essential aspect: innovative marketing material. One memorable example involved mimicking the flagship product, the "X-station sanitizer dispenser." We replicated its distinctive shape in a small acrylic version, branded with a vinyl sticker. This simple yet impactful design effectively communicated a bespoke message, presenting potential clients with a miniature version of their product bearing their brand.
